Cookies

Not for sessions, not for preferences, not for measurement. There is nothing to accept, which is why you have not been asked to accept anything — a banner demanding consent for cookies that do not exist is theatre, and it trains people to click through the ones that matter.

Page views are counted by Cloudflare Web Analytics, which sets no cookies either; the privacy page describes what it records.

Two values, in your browser’s local storage, each written only when you choose something:

• wattclear-theme — light or dark theme.
• wattclear-privacy-choice — your advertising privacy choice.

The difference from a cookie is not cosmetic. A cookie is attached to every request your browser makes to the site, so a server sees it whether or not it asked. Local storage is never transmitted: these two values are read by the page you are on and go nowhere else.

Clearing site data in your browser removes both. The site works without them — it will follow your system theme and forget your privacy choice, so an earlier opt-out has to be made again, unless your browser sends Global Privacy Control, which applies on its own.

No ad network is running today, so no third-party script runs and no third party can set anything. When advertising is switched on it will be served by Google AdSense, and Google and its partners will set advertising cookies from then; this section will describe them. The privacy page already sets out what will apply, and how to opt out.
